“Rock solid abs and a nice butt are great and all….but I started at Alpha because my body was getting weaker and weaker with every birthday. My body was finding it harder and harder to keep up with what I love (snowboarding, MTB, trail running) so I finally gave in and realized I needed to be stronger.

I didn’t feel like I belonged anywhere in a gym but on the treadmill. Then Chris and Jessi put together a custom program to build up my weaknesses, balance my imbalances, and (I believe) light a fire for strength training that I’d never had. When I started I couldn’t squat but 80# and it was the ugliest squat you’d ever seen. But I’ve now lost double digit fat lbs and built up half that in muscle in my first 5 months. I’ve also just about doubled my squat max and am adding PR’s by the week.

I’d say their plan has worked so far…and I might almost call myself a cross fitter but I won’t because then Jessi would be right.

As for feeling like I belong in a gym….by far my favorite thing about Alpha has been all the women (and some men) going out of their way to lift me up and make me feel like part of the family.”

I’m starting my 5th month at Alpha and I’m totally obsessed! It was quite intimidating when I first started since I was new to CrossFit and overweight on top of it (but who doesn’t love a good underdog, right?! ) I was completely inspired by some of the bad asses in the 5:30 am class so although I was definitely out of my comfort zone I kept showing up every morning and putting in the work. It is such a rewarding feeling when you start to see your hard work pay off and start to feel stronger! Love that feeling!

I love Alpha because although we are all competitive and push each other, we also celebrate each other’s successes and lift each other up. Also the coaches are excellent and have the passion to teach, which is so important! Coach Jessi knows my strengths and weaknesses and will call me out in a heartbeat- which is what I need to improve! She pays attention to our form and even though she has to tell me the same thing every day she continues to coach and remind me! I was very impressed when I went to an afternoon class and Coach Lorne corrected me on the exact thing Coach Jessi always tells me. They are very aligned as a coaching team so you aren’t hearing conflicting information depending on what class you go to.

I’m happy to say in the last 4 months I have lost 20 pounds, increased my back squat max by 95 pounds, and have done 32 DU’s unbroken! List goes on but those are some of my most proud gains so far! I have only started and I know I’m not even close to meeting my potential!

“I started CrossFit in 2014 with the mindset that I needed to stay active. Shortly after, college consumed a lot of my time, but really it was my laziness that got the best of me. I got out of shape, overweight, and uncomfortable in my own skin. In 2018 I started doing CrossFit again, but kinda half way. I would skip the hard moves or scale almost every workout. When I began working out at Alpha in June 2019, Coach Jessi and Coach Lorne say potential and believed in me, even when I thought it wasn’t possible. They have really helped push me to the next level of fitness. I no have no excuses, I just put in the work. Since starting at Alpha I can now do handstand pushups, muscle ups, and double unders. I stay motivated because I know haven’t reached my full potential yet. I try to be more intentional with every WOD and every movement that I do. Whether it be stretching, barbell technique, or just stop making excuses. The other members of Alpha even nominated me as “most Improved of 2019 at our Christmas Party.” If I can do it so, can you.
